Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 cup whole milk

1 large egg

1 cup peeled and diced apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon heavy cream (for brushing)

Extra sugar for sprinkling on top

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk together until fully blended.

Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined. Fold in the diced apples and nuts, if using.

Shape the Scones: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Gently knead the dough a couple of times to bring it together, then pat it into a 1-inch thick round. Use a sharp knife or a bench scraper to cut the round into 8 wedges.

Prepare for Baking: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet, making sure to leave space between each piece. Brush the tops with heavy cream and sprinkle with extra sugar for a crunchy top.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until the scones are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the scones cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. Enjoy warm or at room temperature, perfect with a cup of tea or coffee!
