Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

      Make the Brownie Layer:

        - In a mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until smooth.

          - Add in the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

            - Sift in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix until just combined and no dry streaks remain. Pour this mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.

              Prepare the Cookie Dough:

                - In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until creamy.

                  - Add in the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.

                    - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually incorporate this dry mixture into the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

                      Layer the Cookie Dough:

                        - Drop spoonfuls of the cookie dough over the brownie layer in the baking dish. You can gently spread it or leave it as clumps to create a rustic look. It’s okay if the brownie layer peeks through a bit.

                          Bake:

                            - Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cookie layer is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

                              Cool and Serve:

                                - Allow the brownies to cool in the baking dish for at least 15 minutes before slicing into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy the gooey brownie and chewy cookie contrast!
