Ingredients

12 oz penne pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 small onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the penne pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauté Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Make the Sauce: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to combine and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Add Cream and Cheese: Reduce heat to low and slowly stir in the heavy cream. Add half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese to the skillet, mixing until melted and smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Combine Pasta and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked penne pasta with the creamy tomato sauce. Add the fresh basil leaves and stir until the pasta is well coated.

Assemble the Bake: Transfer the pasta mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
