Ingredients

14 oz (400g) firm tofu, pressed and drained

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)

1/2 cup cornmeal

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

1/4 cup unsweetened plant-based milk (e.g. almond, soy)

2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari

2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (optional, for added flavor)

Oil for frying (e.g. vegetable oil or coconut oil)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu:

Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes or bite-sized pieces. Pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

      Make the Coating:

In a shallow dish, combine the flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, mix the plant-based milk, soy sauce, and nutritional yeast (if using).

          Coat the Tofu:

Dip each tofu piece into the milk mixture, allowing excess to drip off, and then roll in the dry coating mixture until fully covered. Set the coated tofu aside on a baking sheet.

              Heat the Oil:

In a large skillet, pour enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan and heat over medium heat. You can test if the oil is ready by placing one tofu nugget in; it should sizzle immediately.

                  Fry the Nuggets:

Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, carefully add the coated tofu nuggets to the skillet. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use tongs to flip them carefully.

                      Drain Excess Oil:

Once cooked, remove the tofu nuggets from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

                          Serve:

These crispy garlic herb tofu nuggets are best served warm. Pair with your favorite dipping sauce, such as a zesty garlic aioli or sweet chili sauce. Enjoy your crunchy, savory snack!
