Ingredients

1 pound (450g) ground beef

3 medium onions, thinly sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

2 cups beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

10 oz (280g) pasta (penne or rigatoni works well)

1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Pasta:

    - Begin by cooking the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

      Cook the Onions:

        - In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sugar. Cook, stirring often, until the onions turn soft and caramelized (about 15-20 minutes).

          Add Garlic and Beef:

            - Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic and ground beef to the skillet. Cook until the beef is browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.

              Season the Mixture:

                - Stir in the balsamic vinegar, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, dried oregano, and season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

                  Combine with Pasta:

                    - In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta with the beef and onion mixture, stirring until well combined.

                      Prepare for Baking:

                        - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the pasta mixture into a greased 9x13 inch (23x33 cm) baking dish.

                          Add Cheese:

                            - Sprinkle the Gruyère cheese, mozzarella cheese, and half of the Parmesan cheese over the top of the pasta mixture. Mix gently to distribute some of the cheese throughout the dish.

                              Layer and Top:

                                - Top the mixture with the remaining Parmesan cheese, making sure to cover the whole surface.

                                  Bake:

                                    - Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

                                      Garnish and Serve:

                                        - Once done, let the pasta bake cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.
